A hypervisor is a thin layer between the hardware and the operating systems. The hypervisor is very thin, small and simple layer and supports the guest and host OSs for hardware specific functions.
So the OS does not need to know much details about the hardware and makes calls to the hypervisor when needed.
The hypervisor enables the creation of a virtual machine and allows the system to be partitioned. It exposes a select group of resources only, to a specific partition.
A hypervisor can also be termed a virtualization manager or a virtual machine manager which lets multiple operating systems appear to have the host’s resources like processor & memory all to themselves.
