I would say that vBulletin and phpBB would be the most popular. The first being chargable and the second being free. Personally not keen on the way that vbulletin has been going with design of late but thats a personal preference thing.

Id say vbulletin also, mainly for that excellent support forums. Also vbulletin has a large community willing to share hacks created, which is very useful.

Great to see thebyp2 ... and yeah i agree with you, the design is a bit odd compared to various other versions.

phpBB is widely supported, as are vBulletin. Couldn't go wrong with either I don't think.

I would use Invision Power Board or phpBB. They are both good as each other

phpBB2 is your best bet for learning (IMO), it does not need linux, it has the largest database of add-ons and because of its already long lifetime, it has a massive and helpful user-base in its support forums.

Just try it out on this host : free forum

Hope this can help!

I think smf and phpbb among free, and definitely vbulletin for paid versions.
One of the best forum hosts are Hostgator.com and Serverpoint.com, though for a serious vbulletin forum vps may be a must.

I second ServerPoint.com as they provide forum friendly hosting at affordable rate. They are optimized for different web applications.
You may choose any forum software you want from them.
HostWW.net hosting is great for shopping carts, vBulletin, and many other forum applications such as phpbb and many others that come pre-installed in the account control panel.
