Some simple truths to help you pick a reliable host:
1) A host that gives you more than 100 megs for less than
$2 a month is either overselling, or will likely go out of business within 3 months.
(overselling is when a host gives you more space than it actually has in the hopes you won't use it. They do this because very few sites actually use more than 10 megs. So when they offer you 3000 megs, they are praying you won't actually use it!)
2) A host that gives you more than 100 megs for less than
$3 a month may stay in business, but is prone to frequent downtime and/or poor customer support.
3) If you are starting out, it is normal to want the cheapest host you can find because things like support and uptime are not important. But sooner or later, when you are ready to get serious, you'll want a reliable host that can afford to actually CARE about you and your success.
Fewer than 6 percent of the hosts that are out there invest in high quality servers and a top notch network infrastructure to ensure 100% uptime. For the other 94%, its about quantity over quality. They get the cheapest, (and therefore most unreliable) servers they can find and pack them full of cheap hosting accounts. With these hosts everything starts out great, but then your site disappears for hours at a time, and eventually so does your host.
When you get tired of going through this routine, and you are ready pay an extra couple dollars per month for a great hosting experience, sign up with a host that is in that top 6% category.
