SEO vs. SMO - Social Media Optimization What is this?
Social Media Optimization is a relatively new and still a little vague, meaning different things to different people. It was first defined in the mid-2000s, but has been restated since. Originally it was very focused link capacity, but the recent re-expression has moved closer to the meaning of content and distribution. Wikipedia has a good article on Social Media Optimization, but in my opinion is not to cover all aspects of the concept, so here's a little something for you.
Some say
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is dead and the time of the SMO (Social Media Optimization) has started. I do not see as well, which is not so simple. I would rather say that together make a brilliant strategy to build.
SEO creates value to attract people wherever you go - your blog or website more likely - and SMO, again we find people in closed networks, where search engines are not allowed to go, and direct traffic from there to your website.
And as SMO, with perfectly tuned profiles social media help to rank high in search engines, as well as the actual networks themselves are search engine magnets - well, open networks. Some networks do not allow search engines to track profiles and discussions and do something.
In case of
SEO and SMO, literally, are, is optimizing your website or blog for social media. Adding RSS / Atom feeds, Facebook, Twitter, Delicious and other methods to share your site to increase the possibility of carrying the torch to someone for you, is one of the most important things that today can be done to win visibility on the web.
Content
Whatever you do to get more traffic to your blog or website, or what you do in order to find in the media, the only thing that has to be in place is to create quality content, useful. If we do that, all other efforts are in vain. Even if people find you or your web presence, in any form, does not lead to anything unless you can provide useful content or some other means to demonstrate their skills and experience.
If you manage to create content that people value, you're on the way to get referrals, likes, fans, followers, retweets, etc, all allow you to expand your potential customer base and take their message to you. That's the first thing to be careful before making any type of website optimization.
He likes, fans and followers are a new way to optimize their visibility, even before the search is performed. That's one of the most important things social media can offer. And as he said, to get you need to have the right content. ReTweet is not enough for others articles or leave comments on blogs, you should be able to create something unique on their own.
Taking into account the rule of the means of social communication, 80-19-1, where only 1% of social media users create original content, but it also means that only 1% of all these people can achieve the top positions and reach the masses to carry the torch for them. And how many of those 1% to optimize your social media presence? So far not many, there is still a good opportunity to ensure a high profile with Social Media Optimization (SMO), when done correctly.
Say you are a frequent user of social networks and social media in general, and also has a website and a blog. Now try to find his name in Google, Yahoo or Bing. How the classification think? I bet in most cases some of their social networking profiles that come before your personal website and blog. The blog probably ranks higher than your website, right?
When I search for myself on Google, my personal blog only reached number 16 - the second page of the love of God! Now there are reasons for this, firstly, I am very active with a multitude of social networks, have been for years, so we created the content of many high-ranking networks, secondly, my blog is very new and has not gained the confidence both in the eyes of search engines, however, and it's actually quite poorly optimized so far. But why is this happening to many of us in general? Since social media sites are highly search engine optimized, and, of course, build lots and lots of inputs and outgoing links, and content have lots of pretty good. So if you forget
SEO and go full speed with the SMO? Let's see where this thinking leads.
The Strategy
First, think about what we want to achieve a high ranking in search results. Why would you want to be in the top search engine rankings with the chosen set of words or phrases? You want to drive traffic to your website, blog or similar, or do you just want to find out what you can show your skills and sell consulting work (or maybe find a new job)?
There is a difference very well here that not many of us think. If you want to drive traffic to your website, try to create the content that links to your own website, right? But if you want to find, does not matter much if you have good links to your site, if your contact details and skills can be easily identified from their profile on LinkedIn or Plaxo. In this case one could argue what good is a blog or a web site in any case, if your skills and experience can be displayed in a social network profile is easily found.
Would not it be enough to build a profile that occupies a prominent place in the internal ranking search LinkedIn or Plaxo search with the keywords chosen, or who occupies a prominent place in the general search engines, but as a social media profile ? Did you know that there are actually ways to optimize the profile of social media for internal searches on sites like LinkedIn?
Having the right keywords placed in different parts of your profile and have filled out the profile in a certain way you can do very easily. Although I have to say here that in most cases, the highest profile as possible, but also looks very bad, as something that is only built for search engines and not in common use. However, the profiles can be optimized, tested it myself and it works well.
'The Other' SMO
Social Media Optimization also means something else. For many companies the next big things are Social Social CRM and Business Intelligence. Having had the customer and other business data stored on your old CRM or ERP independent for years and did not have much added value with which, the times are about to change. Already, a handful of large companies CRM and ERP (eg Oracle, Salesforce, SAP) the creation of tools and plug-ins to bring data from social networks, chat rooms and discussion forums.
In some industries has been clear for years that there are a lot of valuable business data is at stake in social media, but only recently have produced tools to support the process of centralized data access of automatically, and reach their own internal systems. The tools that were soon to be called Social CRM, and the process of collecting data from all media and social web, above all, was to be called Social Business Intelligence.
Some of the tools were set to do just that, to bring data from various sources and analysis for various purposes. And suddenly this kind of way of working is called Social Media Optimization, too. In other words, to optimize the accessibility of information outside of the social media, SMO is also considered, but from a totally different perspective.
Some people even call optimization company blogs, discussion forums and other social media tools SMO, but that is where to draw the line. That's just old
SEO for me, just do a social networking site or tool, not SMO. But feel free to discuss, let me know as I've heard called SMO and SMO what other media is out there that are not covered here.
