search engine ranking

What is considered a success.

How should a site be assessed to know whether it is successful as far as search engine rankings are concerned? What is considered a good ranking?

thanks

I have moved your thread to a better forum, maybe someone here can help you.

Your question is a bit like asking - what is a good car?
It all depends on a point of view - theres the engine, style, interior...

Mutiple listings would be a bigger success than one or two primary listings if they bring in more valuable traffic.

Knowbody can really answer this question for you, but maybe someone will point you in a better direction.

Hi,
A successful site is one that ranks high enough for its chosen search
terms that it gets sufficient visitors to achieve the objective that you
had in setting up the site in the first place.

Search engine success is defined differently by each individual. There's no standard. Getting site listed under the keywords that are being used to find sites is a major success.

Hello melina,

When it comes to success it really has no one definition for someone it might be:

1) A good page rank.
2) One amongst the top ten searches by a search engine.
3) Huge amount of link building.
4) Lots of submissions to blogs, directories, articles, forums, press releases etc.
5) Rich content.
6) Desired traffic to a website.

The one who has it all is really SUCCESSFUL in every means.

Hope it gives you a taste of success .

Thanks
Naila

Hi, Nailakhan!
I don't think the points in your list are homogeneous, I mean points 3,4 and 5 will lead to point 1, which in its turn to point 2, and as a result you have point 6. TRAFFIC to your site shows how successful your site is.

In my opinion more and more quality backlinks are important for increasing your PR. By quality backlinks I mean baclinks from high PR websites

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site or a web page (such as a blog) from search engines via "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results as opposed to other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) which may deal with paid inclusion.

PR is connected to one certain page only. That is not connected to the whole web site

Ranking high against the selected keywords would be considered to be success.

Search engines will also check to see if the search keywords appear near the top of a web page, such as in the headline or in the first few paragraphs of text. They assume that any page relevant to the topic will mention those words right from the beginning.

Search engine spiders have a very complex system for determining page relevancy and only Google knows exactly what they all are.

Some have been figured out but in time many of them can suddenly change. The copy on your page and how it is used is extremely important. Once upon a time you could just "load" your page with reoccurring keywords but as the spiders got "smarter" they now look to see if your words appear natural.

There are over 100 different aspects to search engine rankings so learn and test as many as you can. Remember, no site is ever perfect you can only strive to make it better with each change.

My perception?

- they don't know what they're talking about
- they don't understand white hat SEO
- they're overpromising something they can't deliver
- avoid them like a plaque as their tactics could eventually harm my website

Basically, run as fast as you can away from them.

But then, many people fall for them. And they'll deliver some keywords showing that the website got top 10 rankings -- except that the website has already been ranking for those keywords or they'll deliver some obscure keywords.
