Exclamation Limited or no connectivity

If you have just installed service pack 2 some of you may notice a new icon in the system tray in the bottom right of their screen. This will be a small yellow triangle, which is a warning that there is a connectivity problem. It will show the following error on mouse over
Quote:
Limited or no Connectivity
After several hours searching i noticed a fix with this on aol help, although this is apparently a problem no necessary connected to using aol as your isp.
The following is the fix provided by aol for this problem.
Quote:
In fact, this icon is appearing in error and there is no connectivity problem. This is not specific to AOL members, and we hope to find a resolution shortly.

To remove the icon from the system tray:
-- Click Start, Control Panel, then Network Connections.
-- Right-click on Local Area Connection # GlobeSpan USB ADSL LAN Modem.
-- Click on Properties.
-- Remove the tick from 'Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity'. Click OK.
NOTE: Although this does remove the error, personally i am a little dubious as to if this error may or may not cause other problems.

limited or no connectivity

I am also getting the limited or no connectivity message since loading SP2. Turning the notification off seems like hiding your head in the sand. I hope that someone can give a complete explanantion about why the message is displayed. So far I have not found anything to explain it. Errors and messages that are ignored always seem to come back and bite you at the worst time.

Thats what i think, although aol seems pretty confident that although it displays the error there is no actual error there.

Finally...

This is for people who have been unsuccessful trying everything you've seen everywhere concerning the " limited or no connectivity " message arising when you installed Win XP's Service Pack 2... BTW I'm not using wireless connectivity and still had this problem.

Here is what I tried:
- Deleting Winsock and Winsock2 entries from the registry and re-installing TCP/IP from winXP CD
- Deleting Winsock and Winsock2 entries from the registry and importing those of a WinXP copy that was not updated with SP2 yet
- Running WinsockXP fix
- Running the Internet Connection wizard after installing SP2
- Re-installing original network card drivers

All these options I found here and there didn't work for me so I started playing around with network settings. I finally pinned down the problem (for me at least).

- Goto Network Connections
- In the Advanced menu, choose Advanced Settings
- In the Adapters and Bindings tab, uncheck all Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 checkboxes
- Clap your hands

That's it! I just hope this works for you. If you have the same problem I had, you are unable to use Peer-to-Peer connections, FTP connections and have trouble playing multiplayer games... which is obviously really annoying

If that doesn't work, something you could try is:
- Right click your Broadband connection in Network Connections
- Choose Properties
- Choose Internet Protocol
- Click Properties
- Choose the General Tab and click Advanced
- Choose the Options Tab
- Click TCP/IP Filtering and then Properties
- Uncheck Enable TCP/IP filtering (or check all 'permit all' options)

Okay, hope this helps, I can finally sleep!

I dream of the day when service packs will be service packs...

I am sure that microsoft will soon realise that a large majority of people are having this problem, hopefully they can develop a easy fix so we do not need to go to these lengths.

For now, your suggestions may be helpful to some people. Myself i have the error but everything is working fine so i will just sit back and wait for a fix from microsoft.

Unhappy Whimper.. help?

I'm getting the same problem after Downloading that SP2 pack, at least I believe that's the name of it. I can get online, but I keep getting booted every few minutes.

I've tried the following...

- Right click your Broadband connection in Network Connections
- Choose Properties
- Choose Internet Protocol
- Click Properties
- Choose the General Tab and click Advanced
- Choose the Options Tab
- Click TCP/IP Filtering and then Properties
- Uncheck Enable TCP/IP filtering (or check all 'permit all' options)

But it didn't help. I want to try the below...

- Goto Network Connections
- In the Advanced menu, choose Advanced Settings
- In the Adapters and Bindings tab, uncheck all Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 checkboxes
- Clap your hands

But... I can't find where to go. This is what I've done to get to Network Connections

- Start
- Control Panel
- Network and Internet Connections
- Network Connections
- Stare blankly at the screen *

* reason: When I open network connections it shows dial up, below that America Online, below that LAN or High-Speed Internet and under that the Local Area Connection showing the two omputers with the exclaimation point between them.

Am I going into the wrong area or is my Windows XP Home Edition different from others?

Please help.

Update..

Okay, now that I feel silly for not looking.

I found the Advanced > Adapters and Bindings tab, now the only problem I have is that I don't see any Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 checkboxes. This is what I see..

Connections are listed in the order in which they are accessed by network services.

Connections
-picture of wires- Local Area Connection
-picture of ..something- [Remote Access connections]

Bindings for Local Area Connection:

checkbox -picture- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
checkbox -picture- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
checkbox -picture- Client for Microsoft Networks
checkbox -picture- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Am I supposed to uncheck all those boxes?

Tried that, also tried WinSockXP and it still isn't working. Any other suggestions mebbe?

try this

That should have been there, just above Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). I don't think your problem is the same as the one I had... Or the same problem in a different disguise :-P

Did you try looking for filtering?
- Right click your Local Area Connection in Network Connections
- Choose Properties
- Choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Click Properties
- Choose the General Tab and click Advanced
- Choose the Options Tab
- Click TCP/IP Filtering and then Properties
- Uncheck Enable TCP/IP filtering (or check all 'permit all' options)

Hope that helps...

Limited or No Connectivity

I had this problem with XP on LAN connection showing "limited or no connectivity". Was a tricky one to solve. But in the end, problem was fixed when -
(1) I disabled "automatic IP" assignment in TCP/IP properties and instead made up static IPs numbers for the specific computers I wanted to LAN together (I belieive this action equates to disabling DHCP server option).
(2) Ensured that NetBIOS over TCP/IP was selected in TCP/IP properties for the LAN connection on each machine.
(3) Re-boot.

This fixed the problem, allowing me to LAN XP and Windows 2000 machines together, so long as the firewalls were configured to permit LAN traffic.

Hope this might help someone who is as stuck now as I was!

Awesome marcus , thanks man. Works perfect.

I tried unchecking the dont wanr button, but I was still unable to connect to one of my computers, so I guess, that aol thing is just a coverup or it doesnt work for lans. Anyways, I assigned ips to both, and now, it shows all pcs, super fast conenctions also.

One other thing. My pcs were connecting to the internet very very slowly, maybe 4 seconds to display a page, any links I would click in outlook, or google, or anything, it would take this long. Now though, it works super fast again, every link, all pages load as they should, super fast. I have learnt something I guess. if you lan isnt working properly, then it may affect your internet conenction (not d/up speed) registering links, and laoding stuff.

Thanks again.

Smile limited connectivity

you need to configure you TCP/ip settings in network properties...double click the lan icon on task bar...select properties under general tab...highlight tcp/ip and select properties...do not use obtain an ip address automatically and here you must set your ip address eg..192.168.1.2/255 the subnet mask is automatic and your default gateway is usually 192.168.1.1 the same must be done for the dns server. the alternate dns is usually the default gateway. use a search engine for dns server for addresses. This worked for me xp and vista. good luck!
