Same problem - can somebody help?
Hi - like many others, I too am having the dreaded no audio device problem and am currently going insane. Ever since I moved I have no sound at all on my PC and cannot fix the problem no matter what I do.
When I try to open Volume Control - which mind you, has disappeared from every place except the control panel (arrggghhh!) I get the message:"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware. This program will now close."
In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, under the volume tab it states, "no audio device" and everything is grayed out. Under the hardware tab, here is what is listed:
HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B -- DVD/CD_ROM drives
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device -- Sound, video and game controllers
Audio Codecs-- Sound, video and game controllers
Legacy Audio Drivers-- Sound, video and game controllers
Media Control Devices-- Sound, video and game controllers
Legacy Video Capture Devices-- Sound, video and game controllers
Video Codecs-- Sound, video and game controllers
Device Status: This device is working properly.
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 Series, Pentium 4 Processor @ 2 GHz, 40 GB, ATA-100, 7200 RPM Hard Drive -- really not sure what kind of info you need. . .
Oh yeah, and as a last note, my dog ate my Windows XP disc, no lie - I still can't believe it myself, so that option is out of the picture (or down the gullet should I say).
Thanks for any help anybody can provide!!!

I'm having the same problem that jhellen is having, where my computer doesn't play ANY sound and it says that there's no mixer device.
I can only find Volume Controls in the Control Panel.
I'm not sure exactly what to tell you but I have an Averatec Windows XP Home Edition with an AMD mobile processor.
It says, 3280 Series MODEL NO.: 3280 Series
Tell me if you need more info and I'll try to give it to you.
Please, I need any help I can get! Thanks!

The best way is to buy from online store. First check the driver name and company.

Registered User
the error below indicates that the system can't access the
lx_audio device. the most common reason for this would be a
missing entry for lx_audio in /etc/name_to_major.
you should probably verify that /etc/name_to_major and /etc/minor_perm
have all the proper driver entries. you can find more information
on this at:
BrandZ Installation (Community Group brandz.install) - XWiki
in case your interested in some more background, the lx_audio driver
is the component that provides audio support in the linux zone. if
audio is enabled for a zone and this device is not accessible then
the zone will fail to boot.
if audio is not enabled for a zone then there will be no problem
with booting the zone. but when halting a zone we always need to
access the audio device even if it wasn't enabled for the zone.
the reason is that zonecfg could be run while a zone is booted
and audio support could be removed from the zone configuration
file. so during zone shutdown we can't trust the configuration
file to tell us if audio was enabled to determine if we should
disable it. hence we always just try to access the audio device
tear it down anyway during zone shutdown.
