    Question Celeron vs Pentium

I just recently purchased a new computer on the cheap. It has some fairly good specs considering the price i paid.

The only thing is it's a Intel Celeron rather than Intel Pentium.

Can anyone explain to me what is the difference between the two?

First of all the Celeron is the Pentiums cheaper sister chip it is based on the same
casting but it has about a quater the memory cash of the pentium.

    Let me explain
    Intel Celeron 2.6GHz - 128kb Level 2 cache
    Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz - 512kb Level 2 Cache

in simple terms the celeron cant do things very fast for everyday stuff like word processing watching a dvd etc they are ok but give it a demanding operation like fast games powerful graphic desighn it will begin to lag it wont cope.

But in saying that you have still made a good choice because your motherboard is socket 478 which means you can upgrade to a kick ass pentium at a later date.

For the moment use it as it is and save some pennies and buy your self a pentium chip........you need to check your motherboard to see which version of the pentium 4 it can support.

celerons are a good choice for budget machines and they also overclock very well.

Overclocking is in simple terms pushing a cpu over the speed it was desighned for.

take the celeron with proper cooling you could push it 3.0ghz but you need a bigger heat sink and loads of fans in the case because if the cooling is even slightly off the cpu will burn out.

i have experimented on a 166mhz pentium i got it upto 200mhz and it ran really sweet.
the only cpus that wont overclock where the pentium 2s they are a catridge type chip and they are crap.

if you want to know more or if you want to try it let me know i will talk you through it.

as compaq says, the pentium 4 is the bigger brother of the celerons, but for the bulk of the populous they are just fine.

They also don't carry the much hyped hyer threading (no pun intended) which is a good concept but mostly a pile of poo. The amd64's are quite sweet, especially if you run the beta 64 compile of windows. anyway, i digress.

on the topic of the overclocking, i haven't done that in a while. well a very long while. the last chip i clocked was a 486. i'm just going to go back to my zimer frame

not really. if your in a production environment then you shouldn't really be overclocking.

Just go to google and there are copious amounts of information about overclocking.

hey less of the zimmerframe lol im into the older computers i have a big collection from 8086 286 386 486 right upto my AMD Athlon 64 im just a self confessed computer junky.

I love all things computer ive been like this since i was 14 im 35 now theres a few years of history between me and computers.

An Acorn Electron was my first computer i still have it in working order it came with 32k of ram doesnt bare thinking about today lol!!, but it was the first computer
i ever learnt to program on and lifted the top off to look inside.

It survived my fiddling and bad programming that made it crash but its like an old freind and i still use it now when the mood takes me.

I still have a zx spectrum 48k boxed away. I even had a modem fitted to it when the internet was something called prestel and micronet 800 ( about 20 years ago ). The internet was disconected after my first phone bill. I also had a cartidge drive fitted to it by a company called romantic robot. I think i was the only person in london whos games only took 1 minute to load... instead of around 7 minutes.

They were the days... Arcanoid, Donkey Kong, Elite, Atic Atack, Pac man and defender.

XBox.. eat your heart out !
