    Unhappy No Audio Device Problem

Hi - like many others, I too am having the dreaded no audio device problem and am currently going insane. Ever since I moved I have no sound at all on my PC and cannot fix the problem no matter what I do.

When I try to open Volume Control - which mind you, has disappeared from every place except the control panel (arrggghhh!) I get the message:"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware. This program will now close."

In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, under the volume tab it states, "no audio device" and everything is grayed out. Under the hardware tab, here is what is listed:
    HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B -- DVD/CD_ROM drives
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device -- Sound, video and game controllers
Audio Codecs-- Sound, video and game controllers
Legacy Audio Drivers-- Sound, video and game controllers
Media Control Devices-- Sound, video and game controllers
Legacy Video Capture Devices-- Sound, video and game controllers
Video Codecs-- Sound, video and game controllers
Device Status: This device is working properly.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 Series, Pentium 4 Processor @ 2 GHz, 40 GB, ATA-100, 7200 RPM Hard Drive -- really not sure what kind of info you need. . .

Oh yeah, and as a last note, my dog ate my Windows XP disc, no lie - I still can't believe it myself, so that option is out of the picture (or down the gullet should I say).

Thanks for any help anybody can provide!!!
