Similar problem driving me nuts

I get the "No Audio Device" message in Sounds BUT
Audio does work in Media player, Real Player and Hauppauge TV I cant adjust volume in software, no system sounds and doesnt recognise microphone are some of the symptoms I am sufferring from.
I have a Gigabyte K8NS Pro motherboard which was supplied with an additional sound card which I removed (dont ask everything was working fine with other board) I have looked evrywhere and people have suggestedloading drivers, making sure winows has started audio and PnP all to no avail. The more I try the worse its getting and I now havw 2 Legacy Audio drivers. I really am a bit reluctant to reload XP as a clean install, I just hope that someone out there can help. Here is my device manager listing

Audio Codecs
Hauppauge WinTV Nova USB
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Audio Drivers (thats right twice)
Legacy Video capture Devices
Media Control Devices
MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Devices
NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface
Standard Game Port
Video Codecs

There isnt an AC97 Driver though it said it installed it and trying to run nVidea's Soundstorm comes back with driver not found message.

Thanks
