Honestly, I've tried the little or no change for hosting work coupled with supposed referals or advertising. It never panned out; the time and effort involved far exceeded the tiny return of exposure.

You're right--there's a ton of folks who will love free servie. unfortunately, they are also the people who will be unreasonable about service and charges for real work. This is not the customer base you want, if you expect to make this your profession. Professionals charge for their services.
